The SSA’s listing states that your burn must affect one of these areas. Specifically, it uses the terms “upper or lower extremity” to refer to your arms and legs. It uses the word “trunk” to refer to your torso. This includes the central area of your body, not including your limbs, neck, and head.
- Your burn is “under continuing surgical management”
This means that your burn is still receiving surgery or other medical treatments. The goal of these treatments must be to fully restore the functioning of the burned areas.
There are many situations that can meet this requirement. You may need additional surgeries, or you may be experiencing complications from a previous surgery. - The burned area does not fully recover, or is not expected to recover, within 12 months
As we mentioned above, your medical treatment must be aimed at restoring the burned area’s full functioning. If this full recovery does not occur within 12 months, you may be eligible for benefits. You may also be eligible if your recovery is not expected to occur within this time period.
