Disability Benefits and the Parade of Forms

The Social Security Administration is a vast organization that not only employs 60,000 people, but also houses the disability programs and the retirement program. In order to handle the needs of the tens of millions that rely on Social Security, the Administration has a complicated bureaucracy that is structured around forms designed to ascertain all the information needed to process respective claims.

When applying for Social Security Disability benefits, an applicant will spend a large amount of time filling out forms. These forms ask for a lot of personal and detailed information that only the applicant has. Once the Initial Application is completed, the usual response from the applicant is, “We made it!” This feeling of accomplishment doesn’t last long, however, because within 10–20 days the applicant receives a new set of forms. Unfortunately, this is the pattern through most of the application process—although it does slow down the closer you get to a hearing.

The best thing to do is to come to terms with the fact that if you are applying for disability benefits, you are going to fill out lots of forms. Some people become discouraged at the quantity of paperwork there is to do, and therefore end their claim. Keep in mind that the only way to actually receive benefits is to persevere and complete all the required paperwork. The process is tedious, but, if you are awarded benefits, the hard work will pay off.

Often, these forms seem redundant. And, in some cases, they are. Usually, however, the Social Security Administration is attempting to get a more detailed look at some of the more basic questions asked in earlier forms. The best way to increase your chances of being awarded benefits is to fill out the forms in their entirety. If the forms are not filled out completely, the claims manager will send them back and ask for the missing information, adding time to an already lengthy process.
